Super cool new screen technology

The first time I talked to somebody who had an iPhone 4 and he explained how awesome the retina display was and how it made the other iPhones/iPods look like shit I thought he was full of it. Then I actually used an iPhone 4 for a while and the difference is amazing.

Well Nanosys is ready to do bring the same dramatic change to every piece of display hardware interested in their technology. And who wouldn’t want this? Some notes:

  • This technology called Quantum Dot Enhanced Film (QDEF™) has 400 patents behind it! Yes 400!
  • This technology is so important Economist magazine just wrote about it (and they don’t write about startups very often).
  • In Robert Scoble words: “When Nanosys starts shipping its screen technology later this year our lives will change forever”. I agree!
  • Every screen in your life will look dull and lifeless compared to a screen with Nanosys technology in it.
  • This technology does not take more battery life. Huge deal
  • Does not require a new display architecture to push out more pixels or a GPU that is four times as fast to support more pixels.
  • They can make craploads of it… important for mass production
  • This company is real and funded by the best VCs in the business. They also just won best new display technology at the Society for Information Display conference a couple of weeks ago.

Take a look at the interview by Robert Scoble to Nanosys’ CEO. It’s amazing:

Apple Smart Cover or how your stock can drop in hours

I was really impressed by the after effects of Apple’s announcement of the Smart Cover.

If anyone had any doubts of the importance of accessories for the i-devices, then the iPad2 launch should clarified all doubts about this. The beautiful Smart Cover for the iPad2 was even the star of the commercial showed at the end of Steve Jobs presentation.

As you can imagine, accessory makers are in disadvantage since they often don’t know what the specs for the next product will be until Jobs makes its public announcement.  But as Steven Levy from Wired magazine says, the consequences are disastrous when they realize that they’ll be competing not only with one another but with Apple itself.

Here’s the fun fact the blew my mind:

Take Zagg, one of the larger manufacturers of protective covers for i-devices. Between the moment Jobs introduced the Smart Cover at the iPad2 launch and the Nasdaq close a couple of hours later, Zagg’s stock price dropped 22%…

Ten Reasons Why BlackBerry Is Screwed

I really don’t need 10 reasons to agree with that statement but interesting to hear them anyway. The most important for me though:

  •  Blackberry App World is a ghost town
  • Developers hate making BB apps
  • Enterprise interest is falling

Bring TIM reminds us that time is money

About 4 years ago I went to a meeting with a client and spent aprox 1.5 hrs talking to them about this project we were just starting together. There were about 5 people in that meeting. Later that day I received an email that used a template with the meeting notes. Nothing new so far. However suddenly something impressed me quite a lot. Next to the list of attendees, there was a number in dollars with a label that read “Meeting cost”. I’ll never forget it. I never saw meetings the same way after that.

Nobody what industry you’re in, people complaint a lot about the amount of useless meetings and one of the reasons I think we call so many meetings is because most of the time we just don’t think of the cost of having people together. Well behold the Bring TIM meeting cost calculator.

Set the average hourly rate of all of the meeting’s attendees. Set the number of people attending the meeting. As soon as the meeting is called to order, press the big button on TIM’s side. Then sit back and watch the dollars tick past!

At $25 that small investment might as well save a lot of wasted salary dollars.

Did I mentioned you can use TIM as a regular desk clock as well? Ka-ching!

Facebook IPO in perspective

Interesting post trying to put some perspective into rumors of a $100 billion IPO… yes you read that one right.. $100 billion.

So does this makes any sense to you? At $100 billion this means:

  1. 1 FB = 5 Groupons
  2. 1 Google = 1.5 FB
  3. 1 Microsoft - 2 FB
  4. 1 Apple = 3 FB

The word “bubble” is sounding louder and louder lately…

How rich are you?

With all the TV shows and magazines praising the lives of the rich, no wonder why we end up dreaming about getting rich ourselves and gazing enviously at the lists of the richest people in the world, but fail to recognize that we are already doing much better than most of the people out there.

This site allows you to find out where would you sit on one of those lists and at the same time helps you donate to those who have less.

You just enter your annual income into the box and hit the ‘show me the money’ button.

Regardless you donate or not I thought it was a nice reality check kind of site.
